Begin with coffee on Main Street and the farmers' market, then work the antiques and boutiques before the afternoon fills up. The district is compact enough that parking once is the right strategy.

If a festival is on the calendar, plan around it rather than through it — the streets close and the town turns out.

Union County's greenways, parks and preserves absorb an easy afternoon, and the drives west and south of town through pasture and horse fencing are worth taking slowly. Cane Creek Park east of town adds water and trails.

Golf-minded visitors have several corridor clubs within twenty minutes.

Dinner downtown or a twenty-minute run north to Ballantyne, then Sunday for history: the Waxhaws region carries genuine Revolutionary and Andrew Jackson-era significance, and the local museums make sense of it.
