Waxhaw NC — Homes, Neighborhoods, Schools & Local Guide

Waxhaw is an incorporated town — not a neighborhood of Charlotte and not a general term for south Union County. It was chartered in 1889, which makes it the third-oldest town in Union County, and it takes its name from the Waxhaw (also recorded as Wysacky) people who lived in the region before European settlement. The town covers 12.22 square miles, sits at 584 feet of elevation, and runs a council-manager government.

Two Waxhaws exist side by side. The first is the historic core: a few blocks of late-19th and early-20th-century commercial buildings on either side of an active rail line, listed collectively as the Waxhaw Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. The second is the residential expansion around it — the subdivisions, custom-home enclaves and gated communities that pushed the population from under 10,000 in 2010 to 20,534 at the 2020 Census, a 108.28% increase in a single decade. Almost every practical question about Waxhaw (schools, taxes, sewer, lot size, HOA) depends on which of those two Waxhaws a given address belongs to.

The railroad arrived in 1888 and the tracks were deliberately laid through the center of town, which is why downtown Waxhaw reads as two facing rows of storefronts with a rail corridor between them rather than a conventional square. That corridor is now a landscaped strip; the historic pedestrian footbridge still crosses it. Cotton mills grew up here in the late 1800s and mattered to the local economy into the 1940s, and the surviving brick-and-frame commercial buildings date from that era.

Today the district is antiques, small retail, galleries, coffee, pubs and independent restaurants at a walkable scale — a few blocks you can cover on foot in an afternoon. Waxhaw's residential geography is genuinely confusing, and most sources make it worse. Three different things get called "Waxhaw": property inside the Town's corporate limits, property with a Waxhaw 28173 mailing address, and property that is simply marketed as Waxhaw because the name sells. They are not the same set.

The Town of Waxhaw's own GIS carries a subdivision layer — Millbridge, Lawson, Cureton, Quellin, Prescot, Anklin Forrest, Kingston on Providence, The Oaks on Providence and dozens more. Separately, several well-known luxury and gated communities carry Waxhaw mailing addresses while sitting in or against neighbouring jurisdictions. The housing stock spans a wider range than most Charlotte-area towns of this size: early 20th-century houses on and near Main Street; 1990s and 2000s subdivisions along Providence Road and Cuthbertson Road; large master-planned communities such as Millbridge, which its developer describes as roughly 920 acres and 2,243 planned homesites with more than 250 acres of green space; scattered acreage tracts and horse property on the town's rural edges; and a luxury tier of gated and custom-home communities with Waxhaw addresses.

Public education is Union County Public Schools. Waxhaw addresses do not share one feeder pattern: depending on the exact parcel, a Waxhaw-addressed home may be assigned to different elementary, middle and high schools, and boundaries have been redrawn as the county has built capacity.

Public recreation inside town includes Harvey Clay Nesbit Park, Town Creek Park on Waxhaw-Marvin Road, the David G. Barnes Children's Park on West South Main Street, the Dare Steele Memorial Garden and the South Providence School exercise loop. The Town of Waxhaw segment of the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway — part of the Carolina Thread Trail — begins in Town Creek Park and connects to the trail in the Prescot neighborhood, with another segment running through Millbridge; a suspension bridge sits on the trail behind Nesbit Park.

• Waxhaw Farmers Market — Saturdays, 9 a.m.–12 p.m., April through December. 27283 Waxhaw Parkway. Operates rain or shine with produce and local goods; a short walk or drive from Main Street.
• Waxhaw Christmas Parade — December, downtown (the Town publishes the exact date and route each year). Downtown Waxhaw. School marching bands plus floats and entries from roughly 70 businesses and community groups; the Town closes the route to traffic and runs free shuttles from off-route parking.

Waxhaw's northern boundary is a short distance south of Charlotte's southern city limit, with Marvin and Weddington immediately north and northeast, Wesley Chapel beyond them, and Mineral Springs west. Ballantyne — the closest large concentration of offices, retail and medical practices — is reached mainly via Providence Road (NC-16) or Rea Road, and I-485 is the ring that connects onward to SouthPark, Uptown and the airport.
