How to orient yourself here

Downtown Waxhaw is the anchor: two rows of historic storefronts either side of an active railroad corridor, at the junction of Main Street and Broome Street. From there, Providence Road (NC-16) runs north toward Marvin, Ballantyne and I-485, and south into Mineral Springs and toward the state line. Cuthbertson Road, Waxhaw-Marvin Road and New Town Road form the residential connectors that carry most local traffic to and from the subdivisions.

North and northeast of town, Marvin and Weddington are separate municipalities with their own zoning and character, though they share the school corridor and, in places, the 28173 mailing ZIP. Ballantyne — the nearest concentration of offices, retail and medical practices — is a south Charlotte district, not a town, and reaching it means Providence Road or Rea Road.

Town limits versus mailing address

This distinction causes more confusion in Waxhaw than any other fact about the place. The 28173 ZIP code extends beyond the Town of Waxhaw's 12.22 square miles, so homes in unincorporated Union County — and homes in or against neighbouring municipalities — legitimately carry Waxhaw mailing addresses. Municipal taxes, town services, code enforcement, permitting authority and school assignment all follow the parcel, not the postal address.

Drive times, and why we don't hard-code them

Published minute figures age badly and vary enormously by hour: the same trip toward Ballantyne can double between mid-morning and 7:45 a.m. Rather than printing a number that will be wrong, this site frames the corridors and directs you to check live conditions — see the commute time finder and getting around.
