Union County Public Schools is the single largest reason the southern Union corridor prices the way it does. The district covers the entire county — from the estate communities of Marvin and Weddington to the working neighborhoods of Monroe — and it consistently ranks among the stronger large districts in North Carolina on graduation rate and college-credit participation.

But "UCPS is good" is a claim that hides the interesting part. The county is really several districts wearing one name: the Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson clusters in the affluent western half, the Sun Valley and Porter Ridge clusters absorbing the Indian Trail growth wave, and the Monroe, Forest Hills and Piedmont clusters serving an older, more economically mixed eastern county.
