Equestrian

A landscape made for horses.

Bridle paths, working barns, and a Carolinas heritage that runs deep.

Union County's equestrian tradition predates its luxury one by more than a century. Hunter-jumper barns, dressage trainers, and pleasure riders have shaped the pasture light of Waxhaw, Marvin, and Weddington since the early 1900s — and today those white fences and bridle paths are inseparable from the region's identity.

Equestrian Communities & Barns

Where riders live.

Acreage Estates

Lots over three acres in unincorporated Union County typically permit private stables. New Town, Tom Short, and Providence Road corridors hold the highest concentration of buildable equestrian acreage in the region. Many buyers purchase raw land and build both home and barn simultaneously.

Aero Plantation

A residential airpark with a community equestrian center, bridle trails, and lots zoned for private stables — a rare combination of pilots and horsemen sharing one community. The on-site equestrian facilities include a covered arena and turnout paddocks.

Providence Downs South

On-site stables with full boarding services, and bridle trails through a gated community of 320 estates — equestrian access without leaving the gate. The equestrian center hosts schooling shows and clinics year-round.

Tryon Access

The Tryon International Equestrian Center, host of FEI competitions and weekend show schedules, is roughly ninety minutes west. Many Waxhaw riders trailer to Tryon regularly for rated shows, making the region a practical base for competitive equestrians.

"There is, in this part of the Carolinas, a quality of light that falls on a pasture in October that is, frankly, the reason people stay."

Veterinary & Farrier Network

Who keeps the horses sound.

Tryon Equine Hospital — Mobile

Full-service mobile sport-horse practice that covers Union County weekly; the area’s go-to for lameness workups and pre-purchase exams.

Carolina Equine Clinic — Monroe

Twenty minutes east — the regional referral hospital for surgery, reproduction, and ophthalmology.

Union County Large-Animal Vet

A multi-vet group with primary-care, dental, and emergency coverage for the local boarding barns.

Local Farriers

A rotating short list of trusted farriers covers the area — most barn managers will share their contact; reputation here is hyperlocal and earned slowly.

Hay, Feed & Tack

The supply chain behind the lifestyle.

Waxhaw Feed & Seed

Family-owned feed store on Old Providence Road carrying Triple Crown, Purina, and locally-cut orchard-grass hay; the social hub for the area’s small-acreage owners.

Carolina Tack Trunk

Consignment and new English tack in a restored brick storefront near the depot — show-quality coats, used saddles, and a thriving lease board.

Bivens Mill Hay

Quality timothy and orchard-grass mix delivered by the round bale or pickup load across southern Union County.

Custom Stalls & Barn Builders

Several specialized builders work the corridor — center-aisle, shed-row, and Morton-style barns are all common; permits in unincorporated Union County remain comparatively straightforward.
